Urbanization has become a common phenomenon all over the world. The question arises that why people are migrating from village to cities, and what are the root causes of this large scale migration. To find out the reasons of this mass urbanization ,we shall have to make a comparison between city life and village life.
Village is the symbol of human civilization and culture. About 10000 years ago main had laid the foundation of village, after giving up the life of jungle. Village life is quite and peaceful. There is no noise of traffic as we see in big cities. Villagers have few worries and lead a contented life. They enjoy nature free of cost. The air is fresh there. There are no hurries and worries of city life.

Villagers enjoy with fresh and pure food, milk, vegetables and fruits. In-spite of these advantages village life has many disadvantages. Its big disadvantage is that it lacks modern facilities. The hospitals and medical facilities are limited in the villages. Therefore, they have to come to cites to fulfill their medical and educational needs. These are two major factors which contribute to migration towards cities.
There are certain other things which one does not get in villages. These are only found in cities. Cinema, libraries, telephone, electricity, gas, roads, universities, clean water, transportation and parks are only found in cities. The means of entertainment and recreation and other centers of art culture and civilization are found in cities. Unlike cities the sanitary conditions of the villages are extremely unsatisfactory.
Cities are centers of trade commerce and industry. In villages, we do not have much economic and employment opportunities. This is the biggest cause of migration towards cities. As the unemployment is rising in rural areas and many people are acquiring higher education there so these people rush to cities to start a business or get a job. There is an increasing presence of multinationals in big cities and the business opportunities keep on expanding in cities and they also invite the young generation to the cities.
No doubt, cities do have certain attractions which are not available in villages. This makes many people from villages flock to cities. Cities are the centres of political and cultural activities.Cities are more clean and pleasant than villages. There are grand buildings, art galleries and exhibition halls in cities and city dwellers can keep himself busy even by window shopping. Due to these facilities people migrate from villages to cities. After that they become used to these civic facilities, so they decide to settle there with their families.
On the other hand large scale urbanization is causing many serious problems in big cities like housing, transport, traffic, pollution, unemployment, inflation, lack of play grounds and schools. The price of property is increasing day by day. Accidents are a usual occurrence. The lust of money and rat race are increasing each day.
By summing up discussion we can say that people are attracted to the cities for the comforts and luxuries of life, which they cannot enjoy in their village home. Under these circumstances we must try to improve our villages. Village uplift is the only solution to the problem of urbanization.
Government should increase the employment opportunities in villages. The state should provide all civic facilities in villages. Schools, colleges and hospitals should be opened in the villages. New roads should be made to link the villages with the main cities. Only by providing these facilities, we can combat the giant of urbanization.
