The initial establishment of this university was named as the Institute of Technology. Mainly its engineering fields and degree programs were its founding departments. In year of 1984, its civil engineering and electrical engineering programs and too mechanical engineering programs were then extended to 4 years of time span. In the same year 1984, the governments of Turkish Republic and also Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, they agreed on this point that a separate university should be created. That university was given the name as Eastern Mediterranean University.
