SUCCESS STORY OF PU
Established in 1882 Punjab University(PU) is the oldest university in Pakistan. Punjab University is on the way to progress as it is focusing on the research. Only in year 2002 PU produced 206 PhD scholars, which is a record performance among all the universities of Pakistan. No other university could produced even 150 PhD’s in a year. In the year 2007 only 162 research papers were published in impact factor journals. While during the last calender year 552 research papers of teaching staff of Punjab university were published in impact factor journals. Which is a healthy sign. In year 2012 first time in history of PU more than 1000 research paper were published in Higher education commission approved research journals. These facts and figure prove that a new research culture is developing in the institute. Other universities of Pakistan should follow the research friendly policies of PU. As without improving our higher education and research standard we as a country can not move forward.
Punjab University is also promoting national unity. PU has reserved one seat in all the departments for students of Baluchistan to remove the sense of deprivation in our Baloch brothers. PU is not charging any kind of fee or hostel dues from these Baloch students. Not only this but university is also providing three thousands rupees monthly scholarship to these Baloch students, which depicts the national approach of the university administration. Last government reduced the Higher education commission budget due to which all the universities of Pakistan had to face a serious economic crises. Even five universities took loans from banks for paying the salaries of their staff. But PU overcame this crises with its effective financial management policies. The annual budget of PU for the year 2012-13 was about 5 billion rupees, out of which Higher education commission provided only 1.6 billion rupees while university arranged the remaining amount with its own sources.
Administration is also trying to minimize the role of students in politics. A hostel has been evacuated from political student leaders. Administration is improving security arrangements in the campus specially for females. Development is visible in every department. But still there is need for improvement in different fields. New departments and libraries should be established. Research and development budget should be increased. Administration should clear the doubts about lease agreement of university land and biased attitude with student union. On the whole Punjab university administration has written a new success story. We hope that in coming years Punjab university will gain more good repute by improving its academic standard.
