Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi was elected as the Chief Minister of Punjab in 2002, becoming the first Pakistan Muslim League (Q) Chief Minister in the province. Elahi comes from a prominent political family in Punjab. His uncle, Chaudhary Zahoor Elahi, was a close ally of Pakistani military dictator General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, and served as a cabinet minister in his government. Pervaiz Elahi himself has been active in politics since the 1980s, and has been a member of the Punjab Provincial Assembly for several terms. He has been a Member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab since 1985 and has served as the Speaker of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab from 1997 to 1999 and 2018 to 2022. Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi started his political career in 1983 chairman of the district council of Gujrat. He was then elected as a Member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab in 1985 and served as the Minister for Local Bodies and Rural Development in the provincial government of Nawaz Sharif. He served in this role until 1990.
