Queen Elizabeth II, the former monarch of the United Kingdom, was the world’s longest-serving head of state. She was also the oldest reigning monarch & has held the title of Britain’s longest-lived monarch. Elizabeth was born in 1926, the first child of the Duke & Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. She was baptised by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Geoffrey Fisher, in the private chapel of Buckingham Palace on May 29. Her godparents were the King and Queen (Mary of Teck), the Prince and Princess of Wales (later Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson), Lady Launfal (a friend of her mother) and Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone. Elizabeth’s only sibling, Princess Margaret, was born on August 21, 1930. She became heir presumptive to the throne in 1936, when her father acceded to the throne following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. During World War II, she served as a truck driver & mechanic in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. In 1947, she married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, with whom she has 4 children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Andrew, Duke of York; and Edward, Earl of Wessex.

The Great Depression & the abdication of her uncle, King Edward VIII, in December 1936, affected the British monarchy. When Elizabeth’s father acceded to the throne the following month, she became heir apparent; her mother was created Duchess of Cornwall. Later that year, the King & Queen made their first joint public appearance at the State Opening of Parliament. She also served as counsellor for the British Red Cross.


Elizabeth ascended to the throne on 6 February 1952, upon the death of her father. Since then, she had undertaken numerous official visits to countries around the world. During her reign, she had seen the British Empire dissolve into the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Kingdom itself change from a world power into a member state of the European Union. In 2012, she became the first British monarch to celebrate a diamond jubilee, marking 60 years on the throne. She was the world’s oldest reigning monarch as well as Britain’s longest-lived.



Elizabeth’s mother, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, died at the age of 101 in 2002. Her sister, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, died in 2002 at the age of 71.



Elizabeth was widowed in 2021, following the death of her husband, Prince Philip. She died on 9 April 2021 at the age of 95, making her the longest-lived & oldest British monarch in history, as well as the longest-lived & oldest monarch in the world.

Elizabeth had occasionally faced criticism throughout her reign, particularly for her personal life and for her role as head of state during times of national crisis. In the 1980s, she was accused of being out of touch with the British public after a series of perceived gaffes. In the 1990s and 2000s, she was criticised for her handling of the divorces of her sons, Prince Charles and Prince Andrew. In the late 2000s & early 2010s, she was criticised for her decision to allow her grandson Prince Harry to marry Meghan Markle, a divorced American actress.

In 1977, she celebrated her Silver Jubilee, marking her 25th year on the throne. In 2002, she celebrated her Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years on the throne. In 2012, she became the longest-reigning monarch in British history. She worked to promote peace and understanding between different cultures.
