Queen Elizabeth II, the former monarch of the United Kingdom, was the world’s longest-serving head of state. She was also the oldest reigning monarch & has held the title of Britain’s longest-lived monarch. Elizabeth was born in 1926, the first child of the Duke & Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. She was baptised by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Geoffrey Fisher, in the private chapel of Buckingham Palace on May 29. Her godparents were the King and Queen (Mary of Teck), the Prince and Princess of Wales (later Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson), Lady Launfal (a friend of her mother) and Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone. Elizabeth’s only sibling, Princess Margaret, was born on August 21, 1930. She became heir presumptive to the throne in 1936, when her father acceded to the throne following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. During World War II, she served as a truck driver & mechanic in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.
