Free laptop scheme was an initiative of PMLN government. When Imran Khan won the 2018 election, he abolished the Prime Minister laptop scheme. Now after regime change a collation government has been formed in Pakistan. PML N is the senior partner of this collation government and Shahbaz Sharif has become the PM of Pakistan. HEC Chairman said that administrative approval has been taken by PM for first phase of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif free laptop scheme 2023. Staring committee meeting will be held on 28 October, 2022 for getting the approval of basic points of policy and then official announcement will be made in this regard. Which points have already been decided includes, inclusion of distance learning universities in the Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif free laptop scheme 2023. It simply means that students who have been enrolled in the distance learning programs of AIOU and VU also qualify for winning free laptops. We really appreciate this students friendly initiative by the federal govt of Pakistan.
Laptops distribution under Prime Minister free laptops scheme 2023 will be started in Feb, 2023 in the first phase. Most probably there will be 2 to 3 phases before the general elections of 2023. Then in case of success of PML N this useful scheme will be continue in 2024 too.
For the year 2023 total 10 billion rupees will be provided to buy laptops of great quality under this PM laptop scheme 2023. This budget will be increased in 2024. There are also some changes in the preference list of programs as now more laptops will be distributed among graduate and postgraduate students than undergraduate students. Among PG students preference will be given to the enrolled students in M.Phil and Phd programs as they need more IT facilities for their research work.
It has also been decided that laptop scheme will not be used to promote the PML N and Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif for political purposes.
